Button label truncated when re-displayed using Java 1.4.x on Macintosh

When a panel with a button is re-displayed using Macintosh Java 1.4.x, the button's label gets cut off. The applet above demonstrates this problem:

Click the "Click to leave panel 0" button. Panel 1 appears with a "Click to leave panel 1" button. After several clicks the number on the button disappears on at least one panel.

This works fine on:

Macintosh Java 1.3.1
MRJ 2.x on Macintosh OS 9
Microsoft JVM on Windows

It is messed up even worse on:

Sun JRE 1.4.2_02 on Windows XP (as discussed here)
